3:02p | look at my wrist! I went five days without a cigarette. That's a pretty good first run, right? I only fucked it up because I was so agitated yesterday. Now I have to start the count again, but I have a goal to beat instead of the admirable but indefinite "stop smoking." I have to beat my own best score! xD This summer doesn't seem like it's been particularly kind to anyone I know. Am I just at that age when we're all coasting through the seasons on autopilot? God knows it's been hard to pin down one month from another for a while... Apparently MTV is going to remake the Rocky Horror Picture Show. NO. BAD MTV. NO COOKIE. I have to admit, I am curious about who they'll cast, but still! No. Mall now! Woo! Current Mood:  okay |

3:24p | I'm bored at work and have been trying to access pages like Be Imba and the forums all day and they've not been working. Be Imba gives me "Character not found on Armory" but the character shows up on the Armory which seems to be working fine. The forums seemed to be broken, period, but I just noticed a few people have been able to post. I'm getting a little nervous, seeing I can't be home for 2.5 more hours to see if someone is screwing with my account. Are these errors normal, even when the Armory's working? Far as I know my workplace IT hasn't been messing with the connexion on this end at all, but it's making me nervous. I better have my little T5 priest when I get home! :D |

12:09p | Essure here I come:-D Thank the gods that Kaiser Permanente has a permanent birth control program for both men and women. I have both the Pre Op and the Procedure date all set up! I was completely amazed at how serious the nurses took my request and how I was never bingoed-not once did I hear any of the cliches:-D My Pre Op date is 8/8/08 and the date of the procedure is on 8/22/08. I am hoping that the doctor will not be a prick but in any case I'll let everyone know. The nurse who runs the program is named Karil Craig and I SO suggest this class if you're offered it-they also handle medicare in their programs. (Edited for a minor spelling mistake.) 1:49p | Review vs. recommendation, concrit vs. commentary It occurs to me -- as I work through replying to people who've offered comments on yesterday's post about concrit vs. commentary vs. review vs. recommendation -- that it might be beneficial for me to offer up examples of what I mean by all of the above, as well as trying to offer some suggestions on how to critically engage with a work, even disagreeing with the premises or the execution of the work, while still remaining respectful -- and, by extension, how to foster & facilitate discussion of a third party's work. I don't necessarily know if I'll have the time and energy and inclination to do so (particularly since -- as I think I probably forgot to mention, although I know sarahq did -- I took a really nasty fall on Monday, resulting in a dislocated shoulder that isn't fucking healing as quickly as these things usually do), but I'd like to. And even though I believe one shouldn't be expected to ask permission before performing public analysis or review of someone else's work, I like to do so anyway. :)Anyone feel like offering their body of work, or specific work, up for me to use as an example of "how to critically dissect a story"? I don't want to go by the "yes, you can use my stuff as examples in your writing meta" post, because it's not quite the same thing, so I figured I'd ask again. Any fandom is okay, and any 'experience level' (in fact, having people who are newer at writing would offer some interesting contrasts and things to say about tailoring commentary to the experience level of the author). I will take a story (or a collection of stories) and talk about technique, theme, characterization, plot, pacing, etc, etc, and I may express disagreement with the work's premises or execution (ie, talk about what doesn't work for me, with an intended audience of other readers, describing my reactions to what I'm observing as I read, rather than an intended purpose of "here's what I observe in this work in terms of what it can teach us about the craft of writing". I promise to strive to be as respectful as possible, but I won't necessarily hold myself only to positive commentary or agreement-with-the-work's-premises, so if you're not interested in seeing that kind of third-party discussion of your work -- intended for a readerly audience -- then please don't volunteer! I'm asking for guinea pigs because I think we're a little sensitized to the issues right now ... (I may also do so with my own work, but that's kind of navel-gazing.) |

7:04p | Stroller brigade Normally I dont have any problems riding public transport. I start work at 2pm so the trains are pretty empty at that time of day. This week however they are doing work on one of the stations and they all seem more packed that usual. Today however the whole car was filled by the Moomy brigade. About 2 stops into my trip they got on, four mothers with 3 huge strollers and about 8 kids total. Two of the ones in the strollers were released. Of course the one little girl who was released (about 2yrs old) and her brother had to climb on the seat in front of me. And up and down the little girl climbed. The woman next to me, no relation to the kids, was grinning at her like an idiot the whole time which I believed just encouraged her. The other kids were running up and down the aisle. The mothers just talked to one another ignoring the brood. Two stops later the real fun started. The door opened and the little girl noticed it and tried to take off through the door. Her mother was paying enough attention to grab her and pull her back in the train but there went the tantrum. Ive heard air-raid/tornado sirens that were quieter than she. The child screeched and stomped and fell on my foot and screeched some more. The mother just laughed and talked to her friend ignoring it all. Around me I saw I wasnt the only one cringing. One stop later, and it was the longest ride between those two in my life, we all got off. Of course they had their strollers parked facing the doors. They got the kids in and rounded up and then realized that oops their arms are too short and they cant reach the door button over the massive sprog containers. A gentleman who had his umbrella with him (who knows why it is a lovely day) reached and poked the button with it. We all finally managed to get out of the train but it was certainly work. Especially since the middle door on the train car we were in was out of order. Right now I am just thankful that I wont be sharing a car with them on their return trip. Current Mood:  bored |

12:29p | period in the woods So, I'm going on a 10 day canoe trip. Leaving on Thursday the 31st. (I'm on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo) I'm going to be in the woods, and it's going to be insanely inconvenient to have my period, which according to my pack (I'm still getting used to this whole idea, I only started taking this a couple months ago), my sugar pills will be starting this Tuesday the 29th. It has been working out that I usually get my period about 2 days after I start taking the green sugar pills, and it usually lasts 4-5 days. I know I sound like an idiot, but is there anything I can possibly do now to manipulate this at all? Can I start taking my first sugar pill today or tomorrow and skip the rest of the active pills so I start my period sooner and finish earlier? If that wouldn't be ok, is there anything else I can do? Could I start another pack and skip the sugar pills just for the canoe trip and start taking them as soon as I come home on 8/9? Just trying to figure out any way to avoid the P on this trip as I'll be squatting in the woods and "leaving no trace" (probably tmi, but I'll be with a bunch of guys and would have to either pack out my used tampons (I use OB so don't even have any applicator to put them back in) or discreetly toss them into the fire, which won't always be possible. 9:32a | plan B making my period late? ok so im not freaking out just yet but here is the story...this month i didn't miss any pills and took them all on time. this week (20th-26th) is my off week and i should have gotten my period on Wednesday the 23rd. but did not. On sunday the 20th i had sex. no condom and he did not finish inside of me. the next day (Monday) i took plan B. why? i dont know. the pharmacist lady told me that the pill could effect my period and it did. so its Thursday and still no period. will i get a period before Sunday? because that's when i start another pack. or should i wait till next sunday (august 2nd) to restart my pills to make sure i get my period? could i be pregnant? thanks! |

10:33a | Our home is not childproof, Beth. That was the line from my mom when I had called home when I was in Winnipeg last month. My family hosted my brother's long time friend Patrick, his wife AND two of their three kids. It was also going to be an overnight stay as well but wasn't because one of the kids was not comfortable here and they headed home that late evening. Well, they had a good time showing them around the house and had dinner as my mom put it, they were very on top of their kids. No wonder people have kids when they're young, they can keep up with them! They and mom had to wrangle those kids to stay in the living room as they were everywhere, especially their toddler who was into his walking stage and he, as my mom said, was not staying put in one place he was everywhere. Since my childless brother and I don't have kids, we never childproofed our rooms either, I have a very sharp sword hanging on my wall by my window and it is not sheathed in it's scabbard either! My mom closed my door leading into my room to prevent any kid wandering in there and cutting themselves on my sword. I have sinced moved the sword back to the closet instead of displaying it anymore, even though I shouldn't, I have since removed my doors from their hinges and replaced them with a fabric doors. But the thing was we can handle 5 year olds and up but not the smaller kids in the house as usually they be busy in the swimming pool and not in the house. It is probably the only time that we may have them here as we don't see them maybe every other year or so and usually it is just Patrick that we see. But mom said it was a good reminder to herself of what she dealt with when she had us and now she looks at my choice of being childfree a bit more better as she occasionally complains about not having grandchildren to play with. Now, she is not talking about grandchildren, even though she is talking about me finding a husband, which is unlikely but as I know it might become likely if I do find the right man who doesn't want kids and that I say will be a hard one to find, especially here in bible belt of Missouri :(. 11:27a | PVP gear and guild drama, and advice for a healer. ( the guild drama first... ) Meanwhile, as I noted, I am T4-and-less. The real star of the 'less' part is the Reputation-based Pity Breastplate. Which is the Tank/DPS chest, because I'm still only Friendly with Caverns of Time, and can't even get the healing chestplate. (It's heavily gemmed, which is the only reason it's even semi-viable.) I've run Heroic Shadow Labs a dozen times, and the Grandmaster never drops the breastplate. There's no craftable +heal breastplate. After the guild drama, we lost a lot of good reputation and no one wants to take a member of our guild along on PUGs to, say Magtheridon's Lair (for the T4 chest). Is the Season 2 healing-class breastplate worth the work for it? I have 22 Alterac Valley badges and 4400 honor, which means I need 8 more AV badges and about 10K honor to get it. I don't really enjoy PVP that much, especially to the point of the weeks of Arena work for the S3 or S4 breastplate. Any other suggestions? |

10:41a | I'm not sure how you can shack someone's hand. And for the love of God Alien Force fandom, can we possibly have some Kevin/Gwen where Kevin's in character? Kevin's a teenage punk who's dealt in the alien-version of the black market without any sign of a second thought. He's got a lot of issues and might just be the hardest head on the show. And yes, it is quite obvious Kevin has a serious crush on Gwen; just about any Kevin/Gwen fan knows all their moments, especially since the show's only been on for a season so far. So I know for a lot of girls the tough guy image is appealing, but can we not make Kevin into a wuss please? If anyone comes near Gwen, he's immediately suspicious. However, that same episode has a running theme of Gwen bitching that Kevin won't ask her out... and even Ben asks Kevin when he's going to ask her out. So I just don't think that a guy giving Gwen his phone number is going to trigger Kevin to suddenly tell her he's madly in love with her and is finally able to tell her because he stole and read hundreds of books about love. While they never explicitly say Kevin doesn't like to read, he does poke fun at Gwen for being a bookworm. So in a long, very round about way, I'm asking to stop screwing up my favorite character. I want to see them together just as badly as the other Kevin/Gwen fans but not with a faerie tale in the place of Kevin *headdesk* Quick Edit 'cause a sentence didn't make the sense I thought it did. |
